Professional Background and Experience
In business, Vance trained with IBM. He was founder, Director and CEO of the Microsoft Institute for the Microsoft Corporation and has held a number of Board positions. Vance has also supported several startup companies.
Vance has been Professor of Computer Science at UTS, University of NSW, and Macquarie University.
As deputy Chairman of the NSW Science and Technology Council, he was responsible for the formulation of policy for the IT Industry and the Telecommunications Industry in NSW. He prepared a report for the Irish Government on the development of their IT industry. He holds a BSc from Sydney University and a PhD in medicine from Melbourne. He was awarded the Swiss Karger prize for his research and was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his work in medical decision theory. He is a Fellow of the Australian Computer Society for his work, which has been reported in some 60 papers.
