Raymond Spencer, Chariman ZEN Energy

Raymond Spencer | Chairman

Raymond Spencer is a businessman and investor. In 1989, he founded Kanbay International, an IT services company and major provider to the financial services industry in the US. As Chairman and CEO, Raymond guided Kanbay to acquisition by Cap Gemini in 2007, and continued on as Chairman of Cap Gemini Financial Services Global Business Unit.

He then co-founded RSVP Capital, managing a portfolio of investments in growth businesses across the energy, health and consumer sectors, including Greensmith Energy Management Systems, a leading US provider of energy storage software and integration solutions (now Wartsila Energy Storage). He currently serves as Chairman of the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute.

Ross Garnaut, Director ZEN Energy

Ross Garnaut | Director

Professor Garnaut has played a critical role in the transformation of the Australian policy and business landscape over the past 40 years.

Ross has held roles including: Chief Economic Advisor to Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke (1983-85); Ambassador to China (1985-88); Chairman of Bankwest (1988-95), Aluminium Smelters of Victoria (1988-90), Lihir Gold (1995-2010) and Ok Tedi Mining (2011-2013). He is the author of the Garnaut Climate Change Review (2008, 2011) among other publications.

He served as Chairman of ZEN Energy from 2015 to 2017, and as President of SIMEC ZEN Energy (2017-19).

Norman Pater, Director ZEN Energy

Norman Pater | Director

Norman is passionate about acting on climate change. Since meeting Al Gore in 2011, Norman has been searching for ways to reduce his own environmental footprint, as well as that of society as a whole. Therefore Norman’s focus is on these key initiatives:

  1. restoring 1-million hectares of Australian farmland within 10 years by means of biodiverse plantings;
  2. delivering large-scale renewable energy to the Australian grid by assisting ZEN Energy;
  3. converting biomass and municipal waste to biofuel and biochar; and
  4. helping build new-age industrial hubs and deliver creative solutions to transition heavy energy users to renewable energy solutions

Norman draws on his entrepreneurial and academic background in software, marketing and business. He has B.Com and MBA degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand, has previously listed his IT company on the JSE in 1987 and served on numerous private, public, listed and not-for-profit boards over the last 37 years.

Michael Lane, Director ZEN Energy

Michael Lane | Independent Director

Michael Lane is a Pitcher Partners principal, working in its Private Business and Family Advisory division. He joined the practice in 1983 and was admitted as a principal in 1988 and is a past Managing Principal of the practice.

Michael specialises in providing, strategic management and tax advice to family owned and managed businesses, and their investment activities. Throughout his career Michael has been actively involved in his client’s business affairs holding board positions and attending management and advisory board meetings.

Anthony Garnaut, CEO ZEN Energy

Anthony Garnaut | CEO

Anthony is a generalist who has worked as an equities analyst, translator, social historian and management executive. At SIMEC ZEN Energy, he oversaw the establishment of an electricity retail business powered by renewable energy from a standing start to become the third largest retailer in SA. Since taking over as CEO of ZEN Energy, Anthony has led the team of like-minded leaders to build on ZEN’s previous successes and grow ZEN’s national footprint of customers.

David Stegehuis, CFO ZEN Energy

David Stegehuis | CFO

David has over 20 years of investment experience, having worked in principal investment roles at ABN AMRO and Babcock & Brown and IFM Investors. Working in the renewable energy sector since 2007, he has held M&A, commercial and project finance roles at Infigen, Acciona and the CEFC. From 2018-2020, he worked has an independent consultant advising clients on M&A and investment management.
